Artificial Sweetener May Increase Risk of Blood Clots, Stroke
Erythritol, a highly popular sugar substitute, has been linked in a recent study to an increased risk for heart attack, blood clots, and stroke. More specifically, those with the highest blood levels of erythritol were at double the risk for heart attack and stroke compared with those who had the lowest blood levels.
The study also examined to what extent sweeteners containing erythritol would cause it to accumulate in the blood. Overall, plasma levels of erythritol went up 1,000-fold after consuming just one or two servings of it via food.
While erythritol does occur naturally in certain foods, the man-made (synthetic) version is the one most commonly used, including in many sugar-free and keto-friendly products.
Though researchers from the study advise that more research is needed to confirm these results, they recommend avoiding erythritol and other artificial sweeteners due to the potential for harm and “lack of scientific knowledge about their long-term effects.”
A Tomato a Day May Lower High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease Risk
Eating the equivalent of one large tomato (about 4 oz) per day could lower the risk of developing high blood pressure by as much as 36%, a new study has found. In addition, regular tomato consumption may help to moderately lower existing high blood pressure levels.
The study involved over 7,000 participants aged 55-80. All were considered at high risk for heart problems and 82% started the study with high blood pressure. Over the course of 3 years, dietary information, including tomato consumption, and health data were tracked for each participant.
At the end of the study, higher tomato consumption was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure levels, which may help lower the risk of heart disease or stroke. Moderate tomato consumption also helped lower high blood pressure levels for those with Grade 1 hypertension (the mildest grade of hypertension).
“Tomato is one of the most consumed, widely available, and affordable vegetables worldwide, and it is an important component of the best diets, such as the Mediterranean diet,” said Rosa Maria Lamuela-Raventós, MD, study coauthor. “Tomato consumption may play a favorable clinical role in the prevention and management of elevated blood pressure.”

Many Dry Shampoos Contain Cancer-Causing Chemical
Benzene, a known carcinogen, was recently found in 70% of dry shampoo samples tested by an independent lab. The samples came from 34 different brands, and some contained up to 170 times the “safe” limit for benzene set by the FDA. Long-term exposure to benzene is linked to certain leukemias and other types of cancer. It can also cause symptoms like headache, nausea, and drowsiness from short-term exposure. (More)
A Modest Daily Calorie Reduction Could Slow Aging
Cutting out the equivalent of a muffin a day from your diet could slow the aging process, according to a recent study. For those who don’t eat muffins, this translates to about a 12% calorie cut, which researchers found could decrease the aging rate by 2-3%. Though it may not sound like much, the study authors say a 2-3% aging slowdown corresponds with a 10-15% lower mortality risk and also boosts cardiovascular and metabolic health. (More)
Lead and Other Major Toxins Found in Popular Clothing Brands
Lead is a heavy metal that can cause serious damage to the brain and nervous system. Testing has revealed that certain clothing and accessories from some “fast fashion” brands, including Shein, contain unsafe levels of lead. One brand even had lead in one out of every five products. In addition, separate testing detected the presence of two other toxins in activewear from popular consumer brands: phthalates and per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS). (More)
Fermented Foods Linked to Better Brain Health
Fermentation has been used for thousands of years to preserve food in the absence of refrigeration. Previous research has shown that fermented foods can positively impact brain function, likely due to the presence of tryptophan, an amino acid involved in serotonin production. Some new research has confirmed these past findings with preliminary results pointing to fermented vegetable-based products and fermented sugar-based products as the top boosters of both gut and brain health. Invasive Weed Has Anti-Aging, Wound-Healing Potential
Though labeled by some as a “noxious” weed, a plant known as cocklebur has recently shown potential for speeding wound healing, fighting off wrinkles, and protecting skin from sun damage. It was specifically found to reduce damage caused by UVB rays and enhanced the production of collagen, a skin protein that helps prevent wrinkles. Researchers believe it could be useful in the future as a skin protectant. (More)

The human brain is believed to consist of about 86 billion neurons, making its storage capacity virtually limitless. Each neuron connects with other neurons, leading to an estimated 1 quadrillion connections. That’s a few thousand times more than all the stars in our galaxy.
